Appia Antica, one of the biggest ancient roman streets in the roman era, has its name derived from its engineer, statesman Appio Claudio Cieco.
It was builded to connect Rome to Capua, to facilitate a faster route towards the south for the roman military on the occasion of the Second Samnite war.
It was then prolonged up until Brindisi’s port, which gave the Roman Empire direct connection to Greece, Egypt and the East.

The word Catacomba which means “ Vicino alla cava ” “ near the quarry “ derived from the fact that the first digging for burials was made at the outskirts of Roman city near the quarry.
The catacombs are an underground gallery that was used from the 2nd century until the 5th century as a burial resting place for Pagans, Jews and the first Christian.
The 2 of the biggest and most recognized catacombs are St. Callixtus catacombe and Saint Sebastian catacombs.
Catacombs of St. Callixtus:
Named after the deacon St. Callixtus, this catacombs is part of a 15 hectare terrain, with different galleries long 20 km with 20 meters depth. This catacombs was assigned by Pope Zephyrinus at the beginning of the 3rd century the administration and became the official cemetery of the Roman church. There have been 16 pontiff burials, tens of martyrs and lots more christians found in these catacombs.

Catacombs of Saint Sebastian:
Already used as a burial place for Pagans, this catacombs became the necropolis of the christian by the end of the 2nd century, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. Only in the 4th century did this catacombs take its current name St. Sebastian, who was honored by choosing to suffer the torture of the arrows rather than abjuring the Christian faith.
Not having died, the Emperor then took him to Palatine Hippodrome where he was killed with a stick and his body thrown.
